How to Play English Pool

pool & billiards

A good game of pool requires that you speak English correctly. Although mistakes are possible when speaking English, you can learn ways to rectify them and win more matches. There are several ways you can do this. There are three options: Reverse English, Left English and Right English. Learn how to play Call-shot.

Right English

The right English shot is one in which the cue ball travels in an unorthodox direction. This shot can cause the cue ball travel forward, left, backward or right if it is executed correctly. Normal shots will follow a straight line. English allows you the freedom to alter the trajectory by employing a variety if techniques. This shot is also known as a deflection, or squirt, and is much more common in the United States.

Left English

Pool enthusiasts use English to describe the side spin that the cue ball produces when it comes in contact with an object. You can do it in one of two ways. Either you hit the ball slightly off center or you hit it harder. English can be combined with bottom and top spin. Some players refer to side spinning as "English" and are actively working on improving their skills. While most novice players experiment with English to improve their shots, they rarely know the terms. As a result, their shots may end up going wide.

Reverse English

Reverse English in pool refers to a shot where the cueball makes a side-spin (or deflection) while on its route to the target. This shot can be extremely useful, especially during matches, as it helps you align your cue ball with target and prevents it from veering to the side or down on the table.

Call-shot game

A common variant of traditional pool is the call-shot game. Before making a shot, the shooter must choose a pocket and indicate his choice to his opponents. He must also choose between solids, and stripes. After making his choice, the shooter calls the 8 ball and then sinks it.

Balls of rattled object

Scratched object ball are balls that aren't legal to touch with the pool cue. They can cause scratches to the pool table. It will hold its place if it is placed in a hole. However, the ball can be thrown into a hole or hit another object ball.

Drawing stroke

There are a variety of different drawing strokes in English pool. A draw stroke means that the cue ball has to reverse its direction after hitting it. It requires a level cue with a loose grip and the tip of the cue down. Players have different requirements. Professional players can break at 36 mph while amateurs can do the same thing at half the speed.
