Cutthroat is a game that can be played between three and five people. It's similar to 8ball pool in that each participant gets a set with balls and must then pocket the opponent’s ball. There are however some additional rules that make it different from 8ball pool.
During the game, players must assign the balls to groups and agree on when the shots are taken. Each group is made up of numbered balls, from 1 to 5 in each group. After the first player makes a shot, all players have the option to choose a set of balls.
The most important thing to remember when playing cutthroat: the cueball must stay between the table's head cushion and the rail. A foul occurs when a player accidentally flings the cueball on the table. A foul means that the player must spot it again on the table.
Cutthroat can be played using a triangular rack. Players usually rack one ball in front of them, and the remaining balls are placed in the corners of the triangle. The other corners could also be racked, depending on the number of players. Players should plan ahead how they will call their shots to avoid a chaotic break.
Each player will normally call their shots one at a time. The way that balls are spotted is determined by several rules. A ball that is spotted with the shooter's ball on it must be spotted with the object ball on the rail. This increases the odds of the shooter scoring and makes chasing the ball more difficult.
Cutthroat has no draw. A draw is when both the shooter (or the opponent) make contact with a rail and are not able to pocket their ball. There are no draws in cutthroat. The other players will settle for the group, if the ball is not seen with contact.
Cutthroat requires players to continuously shoot. Cutthroat's main objective is to eliminate all remaining players. Once that goal is reached, the player will win the game.
It is common to play cutthroat with three or more players. Depending on the number of players, it can also be played with teams of two. Teams have a higher chance of winning if all of their players are good at the game, but it can be a lot of fun to play with just two or three.
