There are many materials available for making snooker utensils. Some cues are heavier than others while others are lighter. Maple and Ash both make great snooker cues. Maple comes with many drawbacks, so it should be used with caution. These woods vary in their whippyness or stiffness. Be careful when selecting your cue.

Materials used in snooker cues

Ash cues have clear grain patterns that include chevrons, arrows and chevrons. They can be hard to bend straight due to their uneven graining. Therefore, it is crucial to select the right cue for you to avoid potential problems.

Ash cues are traditionally made with English ash. Unfortunately, this is less common because of felling laws. More recently, demand has moved to American ash, which is straight grain. English ash cues are often darker and heavier and have visible chevrons. Acer saprum maples can also be used, though they are more expensive. The maple timber is fully kiln-dried and seasoned for at least 12 months.

Rolled and bound the same

Ash is a dense, lightweight wood that is great for making a snooker cue. It's not as costly as the luxury snooker cues. It has some flexibility, which makes it easier to spin the ball. It also has lower deflection than other woods.

Receptive to wear and tear

It is essential to care for your snooker cues. They should be kept out of direct sunlight, moisture and heat. It is best to store them on a cue tray. This will protect them against warping and other damage. It is also important that they are protected from abrasive material such as chemicals and sandpaper.

You can increase their weight to keep them in tip-top condition. It is important to select a cue that is at least 17 ounces. Anything less than that can cause strain on your arm. A cue that is too light can cause your arm to be accelerated.

You gain weight around the butt

For a balanced snooker game, it is crucial to know the weight of the butt on a cue. Some cues are made of ash while others are made of maple. Some cues are decorated, while others are plain and simple.

The shaft is attached to the butt by a screw. It is a heavier, lower piece. The shaft is a smaller, narrower piece. These two pieces are connected at the butt where a male and female screw go through. Cue joints can be made of wood, plastic, or brass. Most common are brass-to–brass joints.
